CLIMATE JUSTICE VIDEO SHORTS | OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY FEBRUARY 10th 6-8pm

*Masks are recommended.

As part of a class on the sociology of climate change taught by Vanessa Adel at Smith College, students completed a digital video project in which they were asked to connect the dots between their everyday lives, culture, politics, and the environment to consider what the climate crisis means for them. A sample of these shorts will be on view to inspire audiences to consider the relationship between the way we think about the environment, the economy, and society; and our approaches to addressing the multiple and overlapping crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and social and environmental injustice.

The climate crisis is a justice issue not only because the impacts of climate change are vastly unequal (those most vulnerable are those most impacted on the frontlines of climate disaster); but because the pace and severity of climate change and biodiversity decline are driven by social inequality, since those most responsible for cumulative climate change are the wealthier nations, corporations, and individuals who propel the magnitude of global consumption. This level of consumption has devastating consequences in terms of habitat and species depletion, emissions levels that drive global warming, water scarcity, global migration, political instability, and the loss of indigenous lands and culture. This is one reason why climate denial is such a strong politic, one that exacerbates social inequality at the same time as it hobbles collective efforts towards changing social and economic systems that are proving to be too costly for many species on earth.

The following video shorts will be shown:

Meredith Jones, Centering Emotion … The Fight for Climate Justice

Brianna Bell, The Climate Crisis: A Whirl of Emotions

Maggie Ma, Beyond Dark Gold

Eve Mehalick Wilcox, Environmental Justice in New York’s Capital Region
