Giving Voice is a documentary portrait and audio storytelling project that delves into the realities of immigrants who have built a new life in the region. Through collaboration with ten participants who have relocated to the Pioneer Valley, Gardner creates a multifaceted experience. Each piece combines three elements:

  • A collaborative portrait between artist and participant.

  • An audio recording of a personal story chosen by the participant.

  • A handwritten portion of their story in their language of choice.

This layered approach aims to broaden the conversation around borders and belonging. By amplifying individual voices, the project sheds light on the challenges and triumphs of forging a new path in Massachusetts. Thematic exploration focuses on identity, family, community, and the resilience displayed by immigrants.

Gardner explains:

"Giving Voice aspires to reclaim and redefine narratives surrounding the immigrant experience. I'm interested in how we can create space for people to share their stories authentically and on their own terms. The exhibit aims to be a container where stories, voices, and images converge, fostering understanding and connection."

The exhibit delves into questions such as:

  • How can we create platforms for immigrants to share their experiences in their own voices?

  • How can art empower communities to document their stories?
